Chat and Chat Modes
How to talk to other penguins, and what Family-Friendly, Standard and Relaxed chat mean.
Three ways to talk

Type a message
Click the chat bar, type and press Enter.

Ready-made messages
Open the speech bubble menu and pick a message. Everyone can use these.

Emotes
Pick a face from the emote menu to show how you feel.
Chat modes
A chat mode changes what you see from other penguins. It never changes what anyone is allowed to say.

Family-Friendly
Swear words from other penguins are covered with stars, the mild ones too. If you are under 18, this is your setting and it stays that way.

Standard
This is the setting most penguins start with. Mild words show as typed. Stronger swear words are covered with stars.

Relaxed
Stronger swearing from other players shows as it was typed. You switch it on yourself, and the game asks you to confirm first. It is not available to players under 18.
Changing your chat mode
Type one of these in the chat bar and press Enter:
!chat family!chat standard!chat relaxed
You can switch back any time.
Always blocked, in every mode
Bullying, threats, hate, sexual talk, scams and sharing personal information are never allowed. No chat mode lets them through. Trying to sneak words past the filter is not allowed either.
Chat questions
Why did my message turn red?
It broke a chat rule, so it was not sent and nobody else saw it. One red message has no other effect.
Why can't I type numbers?
Only staff can type numbers. This helps keep phone numbers and ages out of chat.
Is chat recorded?
Some of it. Messages the chat filter stopped, and the chat around a report, are saved to keep the island safe. Other messages are deleted after a short while. Ready-made messages and emotes are never saved. The Club Rules explain how.
