What Is Different Here
Everything that works differently on Old Club Penguin from the island you remember, in one place.
Same island, a few new rules
Old Club Penguin looks and plays like the island did from 2008 to 2012. A few things work differently, so that everyone gets the same fair chance and nobody misses out. This page lists all of them.
Everyone is a member
Every penguin is a member, from the first day. Every room, game, catalogue item and puffle is open to you.
There is nothing to buy with real money. Coins only come from playing, and nobody on the team hands out coins or items.
The island calendar comes round again
The island follows its own calendar through the years 2008 to 2012, in order, and then starts again. Parties, catalogues and hidden pins come back each time the calendar reaches them, so an item you missed usually comes round again.
When the calendar starts again, nothing of yours is reset: your coins, clothes, puffles, stamps, buddies and igloo stay.
The Cosmetics Catalogue shows every item, when it is on offer and how to get it.
One-time exclusives
A few items are given out only once, at their first appearance, and never again. They are marked "One-time exclusive" in the catalogue, and the game tells you plainly when one has closed for good.
Coins
-
A top amount per game
There is no hourly limit. Each game can pay at most what its best round paid on the original island.
-
Double coins with every stamp
Once you have every stamp of a game, that game pays you double coins.
-
Games of at least 20 seconds
A game has to last at least 20 seconds to pay coins or earn stamps.
-
Missions
Missions reward you with their medals, items and stamps, not with coins at the end.
Up to 3 penguins per person
You can make up to 3 penguins with one email address.
Your own penguins count as one person. If two of them play each other at Find Four, Mancala, Sled Racing or Card-Jitsu, that match pays no coins and gives no progress. Other players in the same match are paid as usual.
Making a penguin
You make your penguin inside the game, on the Create a Penguin screen. It asks for your birth month and year, never the day.
Until a moderator has checked your penguin's name, other players see a stand-in name, "P" followed by numbers. Once the name is approved, everyone sees it.
Puffles grow up
-
Levels
Puffles earn experience when you feed, play with, bathe and walk them, up to level 100. Levels bring rewards: hats, coins, treasure and more.
-
Digging by level
From level 8 a walked puffle can dig up items as well as coins. The higher its level, the more coins and the better the chance of a rare find.
-
Rare finds
The rarest finds are the coloured hard hats. A puffle never digs up an item you already own.
-
A notice, not a pop-up
What your puffle digs up slides in as a small notice and goes straight to your inventory. There are no level-up pop-ups either: the level bar on its card shows the change.
Puffle numbers
Up to 18 puffles can live with you. The exact experience, digging chances and daily limits are on the Puffles in Depth page, which always shows the island's current numbers.
The Snow Build-Off theme
Old Club Penguin has its own yearly event, the Glow Festival. Log in while it is on and you unlock the Snow Build-Off look for the game's menus and windows. It is yours to keep, and you can switch between it and the classic look in Settings, under Theme.
Card-Jitsu
When an element is blocked, cards of that element cannot be played at all, so plan your hand.
Leaving matches again and again earns a short break from the queue that grows if it keeps happening. The game tells you when you can play again.
Controls
In the games, W, A, S and D work like the arrow keys, except where a game needs the letters themselves. In rooms you walk by clicking or tapping, as before. On a phone, games that need a keyboard show keys on the screen.
Chat
There are three chat modes: Family-Friendly, Standard and Relaxed. A mode only changes what you see, never what anyone is allowed to say. See Chat for how they work.
Places stay
The island never shrinks. Rooms that opened in the played years stay open, even when the calendar starts again from an earlier year. The Dojo keeps its classic look.
Not here yet
The snow version of Card-Jitsu is not on the island yet, and Golden and Rainbow puffles cannot be adopted yet. Some rooms and games are still being tested; this guide says so when something is not ready.
